1. Assessment of the space available (water depths bearing in mind tides, channel
widths, overhead clearances) with the aid of dimensions or the space requirements of
the own ship.
2. Assessment of the environmental conditions to be expected (weather, currents, swell,
ice conditions) bearing in mind loading status/stability, manoeuvring behaviour and
strength of the ship.
When checking the track, the detailed course of the track is checked, bearing in mind local peculiarities.
The following criteria are of importance here:
1. Checking whether the planned track may be followed in the light of traffic-diverting ar
rangements, sea marks and local regulations.
2. Assessing the planned manoeuvre bearing in mind the manoeuvring capabilities, the
planned set speed and the stability of the ship.
3. Checking the stipulated maximum transverse and longitudinal deviations bearing in
mind the safety and space requirements of the ship and the accuracy of the sensor
technology available.
4. Checking the manoeuvring limits: compatibility with the manoeuvring capabilities of the
own ship as well as the parameters of the planned track.
Since the check on the speed/time profile takes account of output data of both route planning and track
planning, this area cannot be assigned to either track checking or route checking. The objective of this
area is to check the planned set speeds bearing in mind the properties of the ship, the hydrographic
boundary conditions (particularly water depths available) and local regulations. Over and above this it
must be demonstrated that planned passage and arrival times can be observed bearing in mind the
(possibly corrected) set speeds.
