Die Reise führte in das gleiche Seegebiet — das Ionische Meer — wie die 
Fahrt Nr. 17. Die damals wegen Maschinenschadens der METEOR abge- 
brochenen geologischen und geophysikalischen Programme wurden in un- 
veränderter Weise nachgeholt. 
Die Fahrt diente drei Hauptzielen: 
geologisch-morphologische Untersuchungen im Ionischen Meer; 
geochemische Untersuchungen im Bereich der Äolischen Inseln; 
reflektions- und refraktionsseismische Untersuchungen eines nördlichen 
Teilbereichs der afrikanischen Platte. 
An den Untersuchungen beteiligte sich auch das italienische Forschungs- 
schiff MARSILI. Diese METEOR-Expedition stand in engem Zusammenhang 
mit einem Schwerpunktprogramm der Deutschen Forschungsgemeinschaft, 
dessen zentrale Forschungsaufgabe die Geodynamik eines Ausschnittes des 
mediterranen Raumes ist. Besonderes Gewicht wurde auf die Verbindung 
von geologischen und geophysikalischen Arbeiten zur See und auf dem 
benachbarten Festland gelegt. 
Die Fahrt war ein Beitrag der Bundesrepublik Deutschland zu den „Co- 
operative Investigations of the Mediterranean“ (CIM). 
This cruise was undertaken in the same area - the Ionian Sea — as cruise 
No. 17. The geological and geophysical programmes that had to be broken 
off during cruise No. 17, due to a break-down of some of the vessel’s 
engines, were now continued without changes. 
The three main objectives of this cruise were: 
geological/morphological investigations in the Ionian Sea; 
geochemical studies in the area of the Aeolian Islands; 
reflection and refraction seismic investigations of a part of the northern 
edge of the African Plate. 
The Italian research vessel MARSILI also participated in these investi- 
gations. This METEOR expedition was closely connected with a special 
programme of the German Research Society whose central objective were 
studies of the geodynamics of a section of the Mediterranean area. Special 
emphasis was laid on the connection between geological/geophysical stu- 
dies at sea with those on the neighbouring land areas. 
This cruise was a contribution of the Federal Republic of Germany to the 
“Cooperative Investigations of the Mediterranean“ (CIM).
