The ice chart in Figure 2.2a shows the maximum extent of the ice cover in Szczecin Lagoon 
in the very mild ice winter 1988/89. Another example of a mild ice winter is shown in Figure 
2.2b. In the period of maximum ice development in the mild ice winter 1972/73, Szczecin 
Lagoon was totally covered with ice, new ice has formed near the coast in the southern part of 
the Pomeranian Bay.
