dominating signal in time series in the German Bight.
Except for the station 76255/256 southwest of Helgo-
land the sense of rotation of the tidal stream is anti
clockwise. In general, lower velocities were recorded
by the deeper current meters. The PDVs of the vector
series and the diurnal mean values of the residual
current (black arrows - bottom layer) reveal that the
systems of residual currents of the surface layer and
the bottom layer do not coincide. No correlation could
be found between the residual current and the local
wind. So, residual currents constantly setting north-
east were observed off the Weser Mouth (Schlüsseltonne)
In the valley of the River Elbe residual transports
were found in the bottom layer which temporarily were
directed towards the Elbe estuary.
The sea wave spectra observed during the remote sensing
campaign show, throughout, swell portions in the period
range between 5 and 7 seconds. This swell has wavelenghts
between 40 and 75 m. The local wind sea is much shorter;
its focal point was on 28 August, with a wave length
of 25 m and a period of 4 seconds; on 29 August it was
25 to 15 m and 4 to 3 seconds. On 30 August local
wind waves can be recognised besides the swell only from
12 hrs. on, whose wavelength increases from 4.5 to 10 m
until 15.00 hrs.
