Jahresbericht Nr. 17/1962
Seite 122-
Proposals were submitted to make the development countries participate in the
experience gathered by the G.H.I. and to have the radio navigation systems
applied in the survey of the coasts. In the computing centre the computing
punch could be replaced by afully transistorized electronic IBM 1620 working at
a considerably higher speed and disposing of a respectable programming and
memory capacity. How also those computations can be carried out neglected
hitherto because of the enormous amount.
As regards the international co-operation the G.H.I. - as already mentioned -
was represented at the 8th International Hydrographic Conference. Since July 1,
1962, selected advanced notifications (SAH) are being exchanged between the
G.H.I. and the hydrographic services of the Scandinavian countries and Holland.
Besides this representatives of the G.H.I. attended the Intergovernmental
Maritime Consultative Organization (IMCO) Conference, London, the annual meet
ing of the Intergovernmental Committee (IOC), Paris, the 50th meeting of the
International Council for the Exploration of the Sea in Copenhague, the U.H.
Technical Conference on the International Map of the World on the Millionth
Scale, in Bonn, the XII General UHESCO meeting in Paris, the meetings of the
Deutsche Gesellschaft für Ortung und Navigation (German Institute of Navi
gation), the Ständige Ausschuß für die Rechtschreibung geographischer Namen
(Permanent Commission on the Correct Spelling of Geographic Names), and the
1st Regional North Sea Hydrographic Conference in The Hague.
Out of the number of vessels the two new wreck searching vessels "Atair"
and "Wega" have been equipped with such navigational and radio navigational
instruments that they may also be used as survey vessels. The order to build
the research vessel "Meteor II" was placed by the G.H.I. and the Deutsche For
schungsgemeinschaft via the Typungsstelle der Wasser- und Schiffahrtsdirektion
Hamburg. Her completion is expected for the end of 1963.
It can be stated- with pleasure that the practical navigators continued to
keep a close contact with the G.H.I. The influence of the increased number of
reports from ships can be traced in the Nautical Publications. The number of
volunteers from transatlantic and coastal shipping circles, from fisheries,
and the German Navy increased by 255 to 1255. Once again 26 assistants at sea
were awarded a book prize.
