D. Summary
THE GERMAN HYDROGRAPHIC INSTITUTE WITHIN THE YEAR 1962
In 1962 changes in the organisation of the' G.H.I. took place. The last
15 years had led in some departments and sections of the G.H.I. to the sub
division of several branches into smaller units, and the question could be-
raised whether all existing departments actually deserved that name.
During a discussion in October 1961 representatives of the Bundesminister
der Finanzen (Federal Ministry of Finance), of the Bundesrechnungshof (Federal
Audite Office), and the Bundesminister für Verkehr (Federal Ministry of Trans
port) suggested to revise and alter the organisation to the effect of concentrat
ing, a number of branches into greater units thus forming full-fledged sections.
Correspondingly, a reduction of the number of departments was proposed.
Following these suggestions, numerous branches were rationalised or unified.
The former departments Seevermessung (surveying) and Seekartenwerk (chart estab
lishment) were united into one department, and so were the former departments
Verwaltung und Bibliothek (administration and library), Archiv (archive), Doku
mentation (documentation).
A further concentration through a reduction of the number of either the sections
in the departments or of the departments would with the extraordinarily different
tasks lead to very unfavourable consequences and hardly show any positive results.
In detail: the 6 sections of the former department I (now N) were reduced to
3 sections; in the chart establishment the former sections Seekartenberichtigung
(correction of the chart) and Seekartenlager (stock of charts) were annexed to
Kartographie (cartography) or Technischer Betrieb (technical workshop) respective
ly.
For scientific reasons the section Erdmagnetismus (geomagnetism) was included
in the former department V (now G).
In the department T it proved necessary to divide the complex of technical
disciplines, as there are:
Magnetic Compasses and Ship's Magnetism
Gyros and Logs
Optical and Astronomical Instruments
Temperature Measuring Instruments and Manometers
Echo Sounders and Navigational Sonar Devices,
