Jahresbericht Nr, 19/1964
No changes occurred in the periodicals of the GHI as there are; Winter-
betonnung der deutschen Küste (Winter Buoyage in the German Coastal Waters);
Minengefährdete Gebiete (Mined Areas); listen der P- und T-Nachrichten
(lists of the P and T Notices)"*^; listen der Berichtigungen deutscher See
karten (lists of Corrections to German Charts), der zeitweiligen Verände
rungen zum Leuchtfeuerverzeichnis (lists of Temporary Alterations in the
list of lights); Gezeitentafeln und -kalender (Tide Tables and Calendars);
Erdmagnetische Beobachtungen (Geomagnetic Observations); Deutsche Hydro
graphische Zeitschrift (German Hydrographic Journal); Der Seewart; Meeres-
kundliche Beobachtungen und Ergebnisse (Oceanographic Observations and
Results); Ice Reports; General Ice Charts; and the Annual Report of the GHI.
As to the Services of the GHI, the Nautical Warning Service broadcasted
1,114 notices; the Wind Effect and Storm Surge Warning Service promulgated
21 special warnings besides the regular morning and evening forecasts; the
Time Service made 2,212 observations of stars during 100 nights; the Ice
Service issued 171 ice reports or general ice charts respectively, and
answered 232 questions on the ioe situation; the Documentation of hydro-
graphic publications comprises 5,500 titles of the respective literature.
The survey vessels covered 903 nm in the North and Baltic Seas for measuring
the radioactivity of the bottom and the water of the sea; for about 1,000
positions the activity was determined partly in situ, partly in laboratories.
The Geomagnetic Observatory Wingst daily informed the Eernmeldetechniseh.es
Zentralamt (Central Engineering Office for Telecommunications) at Darmstadt
of the geomagnetic disturbances; more than 21,000 instruments and devices
of the ship's equipment were tested on land, more than 2,1Q0 compass
adjustments carried out as well as radar sets and direction finders accepted
and tested on board.
The department Nautical Engineering intensified the work on fixing the
magnetic safe distance of navigational aids and tested the magnetic elements
of auto-pilots. Experiments on the autobahn served the investigation of the
effect of fast running vessels on gyro-compasses. The tests of the
incandescent lamps of navigation lights as to luminous intensity and colour
temperature have now been successfully extended, also at some branch
establishments, to mass production lights. In co-operation with French
vessels, the German and the French emergency position indicating radio
beacons were tested in the sea area off Helgoland. The analyses performed
by means of D/F sets for increasing the safety of navigation have been
extended to all wireless stations. The department Nautical Engineering
