Meyer, G.H.I.; the research programme of the G.H.I. covered the following
subjects: measuring the total intensity of the earth's magnetic field and
gravity field all over the cruise; fixing the intersection point between
geomagnetic and geographic equator as position of a deep-sea anchor station;
investigating the equatorial electro jet as well as the insular effect on the
electrical currents in sea water; geomagnetic and gravimetric measurements
on the isle of Fernando de Noronha; determining the structure of the Mid-
Atlantic Ridge in the western Romanche fracture zone; determining the re
gional distribution of the equatorial undercurrent and its variation in
time; as well as hydrographic stations and current measurements in this
fracture zone.
The Chart Establishment with 173,566 charts could further increase its
distribution. The greatest amount of work went into the correction of
charts caused by the changed buoyage of the Danish and Swedish waters. For
further rationalizing the chart production technique, very promising trials
were made with engraving the contour elements of a chart on coated foils
instead of drawing them.
For surveying purposes 7,200 nm of sounding profiles were run in the home
waters of the North and Baltic Seas. In the coastal area and on the off-shore
swept routes (official routes) 87 wrecks were searched for the first time or
re-searched and another 28 positions as well as 478 sq.nm swept. The survey
and research vessel "Gauss" performed 12 research and trial cruises into
the North and Baltic Seas covering a length of totally 11,722 nm. The re
search vessel "Meteor" covered a distance of 41,818 nm including the cruise
into the Indian Ocean.
The Sailing Directions Establishment issued the following new editions:
Ostsee-Handbuch, III. Teil (handbook of the Baltic, part III); Nordsee-
Handbuch südlicher Teil (North Sea handbook, southern part); Handbuch des
Bristol Kanals und der Südküste Irlands (handbook of the Bristol Channel
and the south coast of Ireland); Mittelmeer-Handbuch, V. Teil (handbook of
the Mediterranean, part V); Handbuch für den Persischen Golf (handbook of
the Persian Gulf). As supplement to the handbooks of the Baltic appeared
the "Regeln für die Betonnung in Dänemark und Schweden" (regulations for
the Danish and Swedish buoyage). The German Notices to Mariners with a
weekly edition of 3,550 pieces provided 5,200 articles, notices, and
notifications. The list of "Minengefährdete Gebiete und Abgesuchte Wege"
(danger areas and mine-swept routes) came out as ring-binders.
Nothing has changed in the G.H.I. periodicals as there are: Winterbeton-
nung der deutschen Küste (winter buoyage in the German coastal waters);
