The German Hydrographic Institute within, the year 1966
Cruise No. 6, 1 August - 14 September, scientist in charge of the
cruise: ORR Dipl.-Ing. K. Ansorge;
surveys on the continental shelf and in the upper part
of the continental slope off south-east Greenland.
Behaviour of the ship in the motion of the sea;
rudder forces.
Cruise No. 7, 26 September - 12 November, scientisis in charge of the
cruise: Reg. Dir. Dr. J. Joseph, ORR Dr. H. Weidemann;
propagation and mixing processes; chemical and radio
logical investigations in the Mediterranean Sea:
diffusion tests; bathysonde, hydrographic series;
current measurements; water samples; in situ measurements
of the 2T activity of sea water.
The routes of the single cruises are shown in Rig, 25 on p. 137.
During these cruises the "Meteor" covered a distance of totally 30,255 nrn.
Short reports describe the'scientific work done during the single
cruises.
The examination into the G.H.I. structure by the "Bundesbeauftragter
für die Wirtschaftlichkeit in der Verwaltung" (a federal agent for
economical administrative management) which had for a long time been
striven for by the G.H.I. took place in 1965. The preliminary result is
an expert opinion on the organization and economy of the G.H.I., given
in July, 1966. It states, among others, that the tasks of the G.H.I. have
considerably enlarged during the last 20 years so that a better classific
ation of several posts and an increase in the number of posts are con
sidered necessary.
The 4th Conference of the "North Sea Hydrographic Commission" (NSHC)
took place in Hamburg from 21 to 25 November both in the "Meteor" and in
the G.H.I.. Items of the agenda were: surveying of shipping lanes in the
North Sea for deep-draught vessels; problems of the North Sea tides;
representation of anti-collision routes on charts; modem radio navigation
systems, a.o. The President of the G.H.I.,, Prof. Dr. H.U. Roll, is in the
chair of the Commission until the next Conference.
The Seewart medal in silver was awarded for the first time, that is to
Dr. Gunther Böhnecke, the former President of the G.H.I,, to the captains
Martin Berger, Oberseefahrtschuldirektor a.D., Hans-Dietrich Harries,
Regierungsdirektor a.D., and Walther von Zatorski, President of the German
section of Amicale Cap Horniers. The medal in bronze was awarded to
another five captains for long years of voluntary assistance at sea.
