The Deutsches Hydrographisches Institut (PHI) in 1984
115
cartographical and technical printing tasks for the production of nauti
cal charts, nautical books, and other nautical and scientific publica
tions of the DHI. Amongst other things, a twenty years’ old two-colour
offset printing machine was replaced by a new model.
For the protection of the marine environment, the monitoring of the sea
was continued within national and international programmes. The activity
concentrations of artificial radio nuclides in the water of the North
Sea indicated a further gradual decrease. The oxygen supply of the deep
er water layers of the German Bight this summer was much better than in
previous years. The analyses for heavy metals and organohalogens in wa
ter and bottom samples permit no recognition of any negative changes
compared with the previous years. A concept was compiled as to how the
biological monitoring could be carried out in the Federal Republic of
Germany. In connection with the prosecution of pollutions of the waters
by mineral oil, about 500 samples were analyzed.
In conjunction with a Space Shuttle Mission and with aircraft remote-
sensing measurements, the movement of the sea was measured in the North
Sea for the testing of oil identification and monitoring methods. In or
der to investigate the influence of fronts upon the mixing processes be
tween inflows and the open North Sea, a rhodamine experiment took place
in the German Bight.
On the light vessel replacement system "GroBtonne Fehmarnbelt", an auto
matic measurement station was experimentally set into operation. To
gether with the data buoy NSB tl which, after thorough overhaul and re
fit has been anchored again near the White Bank in the North Sea, imme
diate data - amongst other things - for the monitoring of the marine en
vironment are to be gained from them.
Under the leadership of the DHI, a fundamental report was presented from
the international working group "Giitezustand der Nordsee" (Quality Sta
tus of the North Sea) for the International Conference on the Protection
of the North Sea.
The tests of nautical systems, equipment, and instruments, the supervi
sion of the compliance with the Ship Safety Regulations by controls car
ried out on board, and the recognition and supervision of firms for the
testing of nautical systems, equipment, and instruments were carried out
in the normal way, the authorization of suitable persons as auxiliary
bodies for the DHI also appertained thereto.
For the prosecution of offences against the Ship Safety Regulations, a
great number of proceedings concerning legal infringements and adminis
trative proceedings for writs of execution were professionally prepared.
The investigations, undertaken during the past two years, concerning the
electromagnetic compatibility (EMC), revealed that almost all the test
objects - inasmuch as the manufacturers had not already applied EMC mea
sures - exceed the limiting values for conducted spurious emissions, and
frequently are themselves susceptible to those types of interferences.
In all the cases investigated, simple measures - such as changing the
ground point, shielding of the mains or installation of mains filters -
are sufficient in order to keep within the EMC limiting values. The
equipment for the testing of the behaviour of nautical systems and
