network but without Decca hyperbole. The "German Bight Passage Planning
Guide" - an information sheet about the traffic safety measures for
shipping in the German Bight - was published in April for the first
time. The transposition of the Federal German charts to the IALA Buoyage
System "A" is essentially concluded; at present, charts of the regions
outside Europe are being transposed to the System "B".
Owing to the installation of the new four-colour offset printing ma
chine, the bottleneck which occured hitherto regularly in spring with
the preparation of up-to-date charts, could be largely avoided.
In the type-setting technique, the change-over from lead type-setting
to photo type-setting was completed with the acquisition of a further
photo type-setting machine. The recording of the "List of Lights and
Signal Positions" on magnetic data, carriers was continued.
The point of main effort of the oceanographic work was in the environ
mental sector. Hereto, the chemical and radiological state of the sea
was investigated in the North Sea and the Baltic Sea.
In this summer also, passing lower oxygen contents were observed in the
deeper layers of the German Bight. By the supervision of the sea via
aircraft, it is now possible to track down even more quickly and speci
fically the originators of oil pollutions and to initiate measures
against them- The Atlas about "Strömungen in der Deutschen Bucht" (Cur
rents in the German Bight), which is also invaluable in that connection,
was published. In the Atlas, for the first time, the results of several
measurement programmes of many years' duration and a numerical model de
veloped in this Institute are united.
The DHI participated in the hydrographic programmes of the cruises of
the Research Vessel "Polarstern" in the Antarctic and the Arctic. Dur
ing the last cruise, amongst other things, the influence of the ice
edge resp. the pack ice upon the state of the sea could be investigated.
For the Nordostatlantisches Monitoring-Programm (NOAMP) (Northeast At
lantic Monitoring Programme) - which should improve the knowledge about
the possible influences of the wastes, dumped in the deep sea, upon the
biosphere - practical work at sea was begun.
Since , the beginning of the year, it is now possible for the DHI to
place oceanographic data from the international exchange system at the
immediate disposal of those interested.
The nautical services operated in the normal way. For ship safety nau
tical systems, equipment, and instruments were tested and the firms
authorized and recognized by the DHI to carry out certain work were
supervised. The compliance with the Ship Safety, Regulations on board
ship was controlled.
In the formulation of Type-testing and Type-approval Requirements and
the carrying out of type-approvals, the nautical-ergonomic judgement of
technological innovations in the case of radar equipment and in the au
tomatic radar display evaluation were of special interest.
