Diese Reise ins Mittelmeer wird zwei Schwerpunkte haben. Der eine ist 
die Untersuchung von Erdkruste und Sediment im östlichen Mittelmeer, wo 
nach der Plattentheorie die Großplatten Eurasiens und Afrika zusammen- 
stoßen; in diesem Gebiet sind viele strukturelle Details von Kruste und 
oberem Mantel noch ungeklärt. Es sollen sprengseismische Tiefensondie- 
rungen großer Eindringtiefe und geologische Untersuchungen durchgeführt 
werden. Den zweiten Schwerpunkt bilden Messungen von natürlichen und 
anthropogenen Spurenstoffen im Mittelmeerwasser. Konzentrationsbestim- 
mungen an radioaktiven Spurenstoffen sollen zur Untersuchung der groß- 
räumigen Tiefenzirkulationen dienen. Meereschemische Untersuchungen 
werden sich mit Nährstoffen, organischen Spurenstoffen und Spurenmetal- 
len beschäftigen; im Zusammenhang hiermit steht auch ein geplanter Kurs 
in Alexandria über meereschemische analytische Methoden für Teilnehmer 
aus arabischen Staaten. Benthische Makrofauna und die Bioturbation des 
Sediments vor der nordwestafrikanischen Küste sind Thema eines kurzen 
Abschnitts am Ende der Reise. 
This cruise into the Mediterranean will have two main topics. One topic 
will be the investigation of crust and sediment in the Eastern Medi- 
terranean. In this area, where, according to plate tectonics, the Eurasian 
and African plates meet, the crustal and upper-mantle structure is still 
inadequately understood. There will be seismic soundings, in part of 
extremely deep penetration, as well as geological work. The other main 
topic. will be measurements of natural and man-made trace substances 
in Mediterranean waters. Observations on environmental radioactive 
!racers will be carried out to study the large-scale deep circulation. Chemi- 
cal work will deal with nutrients, organic trace substances, and trace 
metals: in connection with this work there will be a workshop on ana- 
lytical methods in marine chemistry in Alexandria for participants from 
Arab countries, Towards the end of the cruise there will finally be a 
brief section off the Northwest African coast to study the benthic macro- 
fauna and the bioturbation of the sediment.
