interference events during this period, only 23 were caused by non-official signals that could be
characterized as wideband noise interference, all of the rest was due to DME/TACAN. Moreover,
the number of RFI detections in L5 was as large as that for L1 band interference, 4205 and 4305
respectively, which indicates that incidence of RFI in L5 was more often than in L1, considering the
system only recorded the L5 RFI when triggered by L1 RFI.
Two other important points are the number of strong interference in L5 compared to L1, 40 and
14 respectively, and the concentration of these 40 cases in the months of June and July. In spite of
the clear correlation between the ship position (close to DME/TACAN emitters) and these two
months, it is not clear the reason why the incidence rate of interference reduced on the following
months, since the ship also sailed and moored on the positions where strong interference was
captured in June and July. For example, the ship was moored at Rostock at least on 15 different
days in August, but only on three of those days did the ship record strong interference.
As to the wideband noise-like interference, It was detected much less frequently and only around
harbours, so these were mainly weak signals that wouldn’t be captured by the ship when under
motion or anchored on the sea, as it happened with DME/TACAN signals. The two main places of
detection of strong wideband noise interference were the harbours of Heligoland and Rostock.
