Das Netz automatischer Meßstationen in 
Nord- und Ostsee wurde vor der Küste Mecklen 
burg-Vorpommerns auf der Position “Darßer 
Schwelle” um eine zusätzliche Meßstelle erwei 
tert. Die Station wird vom Institut für Ostseefor 
schung in Warnemünde betreut, das im Auftrag 
des BSH meereskundliche Arbeiten wahrnimmt 
und zu einem beträchtlichen Teil vom BSH finan 
ziert wird. 
Rund 60 Forschungsvorhaben wurden wei 
tergeführt oder abgeschlossen. Sie betreffen vor 
allem den Meeresumweltschutz, die Fernerkun 
dung mit Satelliten und den Einfluß des Meeres 
auf Küsten und Klima. Mit dem Forschungsschiff 
„Gauß“ leistete das BSH einen ersten wichtigen 
Beitrag zu dem international geplanten globalen 
Ozean-Überwachungssystem. Auf einer For 
schungsfahrt über den Nordatlantischen Ozean 
wurden langfristige Änderungen der nordatianti- 
schen Wasserzirkulation untersucht. Diese Un 
tersuchungen stellen den Beginn eines langfri 
stig angelegten Klimabeobachtungsprogramms 
dar. 
Zur Durchsetzung der Umweltvorschriften 
in der Seeschiffahrt erließ das BSH insgesamt 
193 Bußgeldbescheide. Die Geldbußen beliefen 
sich auf bis zu 20 000,- DM. 
Die 7 Vermessungs-, Wracksuch- und For 
schungsschiffe des BSH („Gauß“, „Atair“, 
„Wega“, „Komet“, „Deneb“, „Carl Fr. Gauß“, „Mer- 
cator7„Bessel“) legten bei ihren Arbeiten etwa 
89.000 sm zurück. Zur weiteren Modernisierung 
der BSH-Flotte wurde auf der Peene-Werft in 
Wolgast ein neues Mehrzweckschiff auf Kiel ge 
legt, das Ende 1994 in Dienst gestellt werden 
soll. 
Aktivitäten 1993 
were mainly concerned with the protection of the 
marine environment, satellite remote sensing 
and the influence of the ocean on coasts and the 
climate. The BSH’s RV Gauss made its first im 
portant contribution to the internationally plan 
ned global ocean observation system. Long 
term variations in the North Atlantic circulation 
were investigated during a research cruise 
across the North Atlantic. These investigations 
mark the beginning of a long-term climate obser 
vation program. 
The BSH imposed 196 administrate fines 
for breaches by shipping of regulations designed 
to protect the marine environment. The maxi 
mum fines amounted to DM 20,000. 
A distance of 89,000 nautical miles was co 
vered by the BSH’s 7 survey, wreck search and 
research vessels (Gauss, Atair, Wega, Komet, 
Deneb, C.F. Gauss and Mercator/Bessel). As 
part of a modernisation program for the BSH 
fleet, the keel of a multi-purpose vessel was laid 
at the Peene-Werft in Wolgast; the ship is due to 
be commissioned at the end of 1994. 
The BSH had a staff of over 1,000 at its 
Hamburg and Rostock offices at the end of 1993; 
its annual budget exceeded DM 125 million. 
Plans are now being initiated with the aim of in 
creasing the number of staff in Rostock as re 
quired by a Parliamentary Commission.
