EEC sponsored R & D programme on ecosystem
research. The quantitative significance of
this important alga within the coastal water
ecosystem is being investigated.
Daily measurements (Mo - Fr) include inorganic
nutrients, hydrographic parameters, and phyto
plankton (since 1962).
Weekly measurements comprise the numbers of
marine, freshwater, oil-degrading and luminescent
bacteria, the abundance of yeasts, values of
surface tension, oxygen, biological oxygen
demand, and total organic carbon (since 1962).
Further studies are directed towards mesoplankton
and macrozooplankton (since 197M and the
abundance of Noctiluca miliaris (since 1981).
Twice a week inorganic nutrients, seston and
its organic component, phytoplankton and zoo
plankton biomass and species composition, are
measured in relation to hydrographic conditions.
