reliable than radar, AIS will provide data on the Iden 
tity, position, heading, speed, and manoeuvres of 
other ships. It will also substantially Improve vessel 
traffic services. 
As the first laboratory worldwide, the BSH lab Is 
testing whether AIS prototypes are ready to go Into 
production, I.e. whether communication among 
different types of equipment made by different manu 
facturers and their Integration Into radar and ECDIS 
applications Is possible. Manufacturers from Japan, 
South Africa, Norway, Sweden, and Russia are 
having their AIS systems tested at the BSH. Other 
manufacturers, e.g. from the U.S.A. and Korea, have 
already contacted us. The BSH has become an Inter 
national hub for AIS type approvals.

Safe Navigation with BSH nautical charts 
Borkum bis zum Stettiner Haff abdecken. Von den 
Seekarten konnten wir Im vergangenen Jahr 75 neue, 
überarbeitete Ausgaben herausgeben, außerdem 
erstmals einen In deutsch-polnischer Co-Produktlon 
entstandenen Sportschlfffahrts-Kartensatz für die 
Danzlger Bucht, mit dem wir unsere Im Vorjahr 
gestartete enge bilaterale Zusammenarbeit mit Polen 
weiter vertiefen konnten. 
Rechtzeitig zum Inkrafttreten der International be 
schlossenen Verlängerung des Tiefwasserweges In 
die „Kadetrlnne“ hinein, erschien die Neuausgabe 
der Seekarte, In der dieser, stark frequentierte Schiff 
fahrtsweg durch eine neue, zusätzlich betonnte 
Wegeführung gekennzeichnet Ist. Tiefgehenden 
Schiffen wird so eine weitere Hilfestellung gegeben, 
um den flachen Teil der Kadetrlnne leichter zu mel 
den. In den vergangenen Jahren gab es dort Immer 
wieder Vorfälle mit tiefgehenden Schiffen, die den In 
Seekarten ausgewiesenen tiefsten Schifffahrtsweg 
nicht genau eingehalten hatten.

craft chart series ensure that both professional cap 
tains and recreational boaters steer a safe course. 
Our customers are kept Informed about chart correc 
tions of navigational Importance In our weekly 
Notices to Mariners and through our weekly correc 
tion service on the Internet. The BSH publications 
comprise 510 nautical charts, 44 nautical books for 
the European waters, and 15 small-craft chart folios 
covering the coastal waters between the Island of 
Borkum and the Firth of Stettin. Last year, we publish 
ed 75 revised New Editions of our nautical charts 
and, for the first time, a small-craft chart folio for the 
Gulf of Gdansk which had been developed as a 
German-Polish co-productlon project, strengthening 
our close co-operation with Poland which had begun 
the year before.
