unbekannte Wracks und Unterwasserhindernisse
entdeckt.
coastal waters have not been adequately surveyed.
In many parts of the world, the last surveys date
back several decades and in no way meet present-
day GPS navigation requirements.
2003
• ATAIR, KOMET, WEGA and DENEB covered about
30,800 km of sounding lines
(North Sea 20,500 km, Baltic Sea 10,300 km).
• They checked 104 known wreck positions for
depth changes and discovered 46 previously
unknown wrecks and underwater obstructions.
• 250 km 2 of the main Baltic fairways were re-sur-
veyed according to a new quality standard using a
high-resolution method. The new survey method
led to the detection of more new underwater
obstructions than in the past.
• The new survey vessel CAPELLA was built at the
Fassmer shipyard and christened by Dr. Ingrid
Stolpe, wife of the Federal Minister of Transport,
Building and Housing, on 10 October 2003.
Focused:
Rostock becomes Germany's new centre
of hydrography
The BSH, with its headquarters in Hamburg and
Rostock since 1990, moved to new, larger office
buildings in Rostock in 2003 and has now establish
ed its centre of hydrography in Rostock: hydrogra
phic surveying, wreck search, and the production of
nautical charts and publications. Also its oceano
graphic services for the Baltic Sea are located at the
Rostock headquarters, which will eventually have
about 270 employees. The home port of two of the
survey vessels - “Deneb” and “Capella” - is Rostock.
Their berths in front of the BSH headquarters underli
