Die Ursprünge des BSH reichen zurück bis zur Norddeutschen Seewarte, die
schon 1868 erste Segelanweisungen nach nautischen und meteorologischen
Beobachtungen anfertigte. Ihr folgte ab 1875 die Deutsche Seewarte,
ab 1945 das Deutsche Hydrographische Institut - seit 1990 das BSH. Für die
Seevermessung, Wracksuche und Meeresforschung betreibt das BSH fünf
Schiffe, die zu den modernsten weltweit zählen.

The BSH is the Federal maritime authority of Germany, headquartered In the
Hanseatic cities of Hamburg and Rostock. The activities of the BSH reflect a
multidisciplinary approach to nearly all areas of maritime policy - In line with
future European maritime policy, whose goal Is the integration of different
aspects of the oceans and seas which had been considered separately In the
past: shipping, protection of the marine environment, and the maritime industry.

As a novel approach in European policy, the Green Paper on a Future Maritime
Policy for the European Union has set the course for application of the principle
of sustainable development to ocean management, which will allow the use
of marine resources while preserving the natural environment for future
generations. Within the framework of Its responsibilities, the BSH is making an
Important contribution toward this goal. Without Its budget of € 62 million
and the professional skills of Its 840 highly motivated employees, It could
hardly cope with this wide and complex range of tasks:
