In order to develop a sustainable energy mix, the percentage of renewable
energies in Germany Is planned to be Increased markedly by operating,
Inter alia, large-scale offshore wind farms. The BSH is the German
Federal agency responsible for granting planning approvals for offshore
Installations In Germany’s Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) In the North and
Baltic Seas. That applies not only to the currently planned 40 wind farm
projects (34 in the North Sea, 6 In the Baltic Sea) and to the power cables
connecting the wind farms to the electricity grid. As the North European
Infrastructure for gas and oil transports relies heavily on pipelines, the BSH
Is also responsible for granting planning permissions for pipelines to be
laid In the EEZ of the North and Baltic Seas, e. g. the Baltic gas pipeline
