Navigational safety and modern navigational systems 
As ship traffic Is Increasing, demands on safe navigation continue to grow. 
Increasingly sophisticated navigational systems operated by highly qualified 
personnel help to Improve navigational safety. The development and worldwide 
Introduction of state-of-the-art navigational and radiocommunications equipment 
renders ships’ officers’ tasks easier and prevents marine accidents. 
In Germany, the BSH helps to ensure compliance with Increasingly strict 
safety requirements. Its testing laboratory has an International reputation as 
being one of the leading laboratories for testing novel navigational systems 
such as AIS, VDR, and ECDIS. Ninety percent of all Items of navigational and

production have been type-tested and approved by the BSH. Assessments of 
the quality management systems of equipment manufacturers, who are required 
to guarantee uniform quality of their products, and regular safety checks on
