EXPANDING 
Energy production at sea 
Energy production in Germany relies 
mainly on fossil fuels: oil, gas, and 
coal. In order to develop a sustainable 
energy mix, the percentage of 
renewable energies Is planned to 
be Increased markedly, Inter alia by 
Installing offshore wind farms. The 
BSH Is the German federal agency 
which grants planning approvals for 
offshore Installations In Germany’s 
Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) In 
the North and Baltic Seas. 20 wind 
farm projects comprising more 
than 1,400 wind turbines had been 
approved by 2007: 17 projects In 
the North Sea, and three In the Baltic 
Sea. Also oil and gas pipelines are 
playing an Important role In the North 
European Infrastructure. The BSH Is 
also responsible for granting planning 
permissions for submarine pipelines, 
e. g. the Baltic gas pipeline project, In 
the German EEZ.

5 of the wind farm approvals were 
granted In 2007: one project 35 
km north of Rügen, and four pro 
jects In the North Sea (2 projects 
north of Borkum, and 2 projects 
25 km north of Helgoland); 
2 approvals for the laying of power 
cables connecting wind farms to 
the electricity grid; 
Continuation of the approval pro 
cedures for the construction of 
the planned gas pipeline from 
Russia, across the Baltic Sea, 
to Germany (Nord Stream); first 
project documents laid open to 
public inspection.

Für Schifffahrt, Häfen, Unternehmen, 
Küstenbewohner und Tourismus sind 
sie unverzichtbar - die zuverlässigen 
Vorhersagen und Warnungen des 
BSH für die deutsche Nord- und 
Ostseeküste. Mehrmals am Tag 
werden die aktuellen Wasserstände 
vorausgesagt. Genauso aktuell 
sind die Informationen des BSH zu 
Gezeiten, Seegang und Wasser 
temperaturen sowie Im Winterhalbjahr 
zusätzlich zur Eisbedeckung. 
Im Seeverkehr kann dies eine 
erhebliche wirtschaftliche Bedeutung
