Für neue Herausforderungen ist das BSH stets 
offen und arbeitet trotz wachsender Aufgaben 
bei seit Jahren anhaltenden Personalein 
sparungen zuverlässig effizient, und kunden 
orientiert. Dazu trägt maßgeblich die hohe Ein 
satzfreude und Professionalität der Beschäftigten 
bei. Ein solides, unverzichtbares Rückgrat für 
alle Fachbereiche des BSH bildet zudem die 
zentrale Verwaltung mit ihren vielen internen 
Dienstleistungen sowie die Steuerungsinstru 
mente des Controllings auf der Grundlage einer 
produktbezogenen Kosten- und Leistungs 
rechnung und einer kontinuierlichen Qualitäts 
kontrolle. 
The BSH is always open to new challenges and 
has been able, despite an increasing workload 
and severe personnel cutbacks over the past 
several years, to continue working efficiently and 
to maintain its customer oriented approach. This 
has been possible thanks to our employees’ high 
commitment and professionality. The BSH also 
has a solid backbone in the form of its central 
administration, which provides a wide range 
of internal services to all of its departments, 
ensures efficient Controlling including product- 
based cost-performance analysis, and carries 
out consistent quality management. 
Die Aufgaben des BSH sind vielfältig. Daher 
gibt es kaum ein Berufsfeld, das hier nicht 
vertreten ist, u.a. Naturwissenschaftler wie 
Geologen oder Ozeanographen, Techniker, 
Ingenieure und Informatiker, Buchbinder und 
Drucker, Bibliothekare, Laboranten, Kapitäne, 
Nautiker und Schiffsmechaniker, Juristen, 
Volkswirte und Verwaltungsfachangestellte - 
um nur einige zu nennen. Von den insgesamt 
851 Beschäftigten arbeiten vier im Schicht 
dienst, um z. B. im Wasserstandsvorhersage- 
und Stumflutwarndienst einen rund-um-die-Uhr- 
Service zu gewährleisten. Zwei Beschäftigte 
waren 2009 für Tätigkeiten bei der Internationa 
len Seeschifffahrtsorganisation sowie der inter 
nationalen Atomenergiebehörde freigestellt. 
Kein Wunder also, dass die Personalausgaben 
trotz der gesetzlich vorgegebenen Personalein 
sparung von 0,9 Prozent im Jahr 2009 - dies 
waren elf Stellen - weiterhin den größten 
Kostenblock ausmachen.

The BSH has a wide range of tasks. Therefore, 
there is hardly any professional field that is not 
represented at the agency, which employs, e.g., 
scientists like geologists and oceanographers, 
engineers, IT specialists, bookbinders and 
printing technicians, librarians, ships' masters 
and ratings, ship engineers, legal experts, 
economists, and administrative personnel, to 
mention just a few. Of the BSH’s 851 employees, 
four are working shifts to ensure 24-hour service, 
for example in its water-level forecasting and 
storm surge warning services. Two of the BSH 
employees were assigned tasks at the Inter 
national Maritime Organization and the Interna 
tional Atomic Energy Agency in 2009. 
It is hardly amazing, therefore, that payroll 
expenses constitute the biggest single cost factor 
at the BSH. Payroll expenses in 2009 remained 
at about the same level as in 2008 despite a 
further personnel reduction by 0.9 percent, or 
11 payroll positions, in accordance with 
applicable austerity legislation.

Die Ausbildung junger Menschen ist und bleibt im BSH eine wichtige Aufgabe. 
Neben den 41 Azubis wurden zusätzlich 16 Schülerpraktikanten, 5 Rechts 
referendare und 24 Praktikanten betreut. 
Education of young people is and remains an important task at the BSH. 
41 trainees, 16 student interns, 5 articled clerks and 24 interns underwent training 
at the BSH.
