Längst haben verschiedenste Wirtschaftszweige 
begonnen, unsere Meere zu erobern. Es sind 
bei weitem nicht mehr nur Schiffe, die den ver 
meintlich grenzenlosen Raum auf dem 
Wasser beanspruchen. Kabel und Pipelines 
bilden immer dichtere Muster auf dem Meeres 
boden. Zu Öl- und Gasplattformen, Aquakultur, 
Kies- und Sandabbau und der Suche nach 
Rohstoffen gesellen sich zunehmend Wind 
räder. So steht in der deutschen Ausschließ 
lichen Wirtschaftszone (AWZ) seit Ende 2009 
jetzt der erste deutsche Offshore Windpark. 
Diese Entwicklung bedeutet ungeheure 
Chancen - aber sie verlangt von uns noch 
mehr Sensibilität, um den notwendigen Schutz 
der Meeresumwelt weiter zu gewährleisten. 
Mit den Ende 2009 verabschiedeten Raum 
ordnungsplänen für die deutsche AWZ können 
jetzt Flächen für neue Nutzungen noch gezielter 
vergeben werden. 
Die Raumordnungspläne sind Grundlage für die 
Nachhaltigkeit der Nutzung des Meeres, für die 
umweltgerechte Sicherung unseres künftigen 
Energiebedarfs, der Sicherheit der Schifffahrt 
und den Meeresschutz gleichermaßen. 
Für diese „neuen Nutzer“ des Meeres ebenso 
wie für die Schifffahrt sind zuverlässige und

A range of different industries have embarked 
on conquering the world’s oceans for quite 
some time now. Today, it is obvious that the 
wide and seemingly endless ocean spaces 
have ceased to be the exclusive domain of 
ships. Submarine cables and pipelines are 
forming increasingly intricate patterns on 
the sea floor. Besides oil and gas production 
platforms, mariculture, the mining of sand and 
gravel deposits and exploration for other natural 
resources, more and more wind farm projects 
are being implemented. The first German off 
shore wind farm built in the German Exclusive 
Economic Zone (EEZ) was completed in late 
2009. This expansive scheme provides 
enormous opportunities, but it also requires an 
extremely sensitive approach which ensures 
protection of the marine environment also in the 
future. 
Maritime Spatial Plans covering the area of the 
German EEZ, which were adopted at the end of 
2009, allow areas for novel uses to be allocated 
more specifically. 
Maritime Spatial Plans are the basis for 
sustainable use of the oceans, environmentally 
compatible and secure energy production 
satisfying future demand, the safety of shipping, 
and protection of the marine environment.
