Mit seinen zuverlässigen Service- und Bera 
tungsleistungen für Seeleute, Reedereien sowie 
Aus- und Fortbildungsstätten trägt das BSH 
dazu bei, dass die internationalen Verein 
barungen in Deutschland durchgesetzt, 
kontrolliert und ggf. sanktioniert werden. So 
werden im BSH alle hierzulande erworbenen 
nautischen und technischen Befähigungszeug 
nisse ausgestellt bzw. verlängert und zentral 
in einem elektronischen Verzeichnis gelistet, 
damit ein schneller Informationsaustausch 
zwischen Wirtschaft und Verwaltung gewähr 
leistet ist, z. B. um die Echtheit oder Gültigkeit 
von Zeugnissen zu überprüfen. 
» 2009 hat das BSH rund 3000 Befähigungs 
nachweise für Seeleute erteilt, die als 
Beauftragte für die Gefahrenabwehr auf 
Schiffen eingesetzt sind; 
» Für die praktische Ausbildung von tech 
nischen Offiziersanwärtern wurde ein 
neues Handbuch herausgegeben, um das 
hohe Ausbildungsniveau zu erhalten.

on provided to mariners, shipping companies, 
and training institutions, the BSH ensures 
implementation of international conventions in 
Germany, checks compliance with applicable 
regulations and imposes fines for non-com 
pliance. The BSH is the competent agency in 
Germany issuing navigational and engineering 
Certificates of Competency and deciding on 
their renewal. All certificates are listed in a data 
base to facilitate an easy exchange of informa 
tion between industry and the Administration, 
e.g. to check the authenticity or validity of 
certificates. 
» In 2009, the BSH issued about 3,000 
Certificates of Proficiency to mariners 
working as Ship Security Officers on board 
ships; 
» A manual for practical training of Engineer 
Cadets has been issued in order to 
maintain a high professional standard.
