The seasonal signals are removed. In 
order to calculate the heat content 
anomalies along a centred line the AX-3 
data are projected on a ‘mean orthodrome’ 
by means of a regression function. This 
method works well in areas east of 40 °W 
where the mean fields of temperature and 
heat content show a zonal structure.
