In this report, the data gathered during an Airborne
Remote Sensing Programme (FMP) sponsored by the German
Federal Ministry of Research and Techology (BMFT) have
been compiled together with data of sea wave measure-
ments carried out parallelly.
HYDROGRAPHY
Observations (G.A, Becker)
Within the framework of a German Airborne Remote
Sensing Programme (FMP) sponsored by the BMFT infrared
scanning sensors were investigated in a test area in
the German Bight, to see how far they are suitable for
providing sea surface temperature distributions with
sufficient accuracy.
For logistic reasons we selected, as a testing area,
the inner part of the German Bight between the light-
vessels "Elbe 1" and "Deutsche Bucht" and between the
lightvessel "Weser" and the island of Helgoland. Fur-
chermore the lightvesselsand the island of Helgoland
were outstanding points for air navigation. In addition,
comparative values could be obtained on board the
lightvessels and on the island of Helgoland,
For the £field-phase during which the aircraft of the
DVFLR (Deutsche Versuchsanstalt für Luft- und Raumfahrt)
was to undertake several fly-over, the period 15 August
to 10 September 1976 had been envisaged, During this
time, RSV GAUSS had to be in the area of investigations
in order to carry out the observations necessary for
the comparison and correction of the remote sensing
data, As, for reasons of maintenance, the aircraft could
only fly on very few days, RSV GAUSS was available for
other investigations. There was sufficient time to de-
dloy and recover instrument moorings and to carry out
