AO
intermediate water layer was found, Below 250 m,
the hydrographic conditions remain almost constant
down to the bottom,
On the Dohrn Bank, Station 639, Polar and Atlantic
water are again involved in the construction of the
vertical water column (Fig, 108), A surface layer
of 25 m magnitude, with temperatures below =1 °c
and salinities between 32,75 ° /oo and 33,25 ° /o0o0
was observed, Between 25 m and 55m depth, the tem-
perature and salinity rise to 6 9c and 34,5 °/oo,
respectively. Below this T-S gradient layer, the
water column is dominated by Atlantic water which
axtends downwards to 280 m water depth,.
Fig. 109 shows a CTD profile which is typical for
Atlantic water, At Station 647, a thoroughly mixed
surface layer of 40 m magnitude ( T@X9 °C; S 35,1 % /oo)
lies over an almost homogeneous layer which extends
down to the bottom (6 °C © T£ 7 °Cı Sw35,1 °/oo).
To the Northeast of the Gauß Bank, at Station 650,
the hydrographic conditions in the near-surface layer
are dominated by Polar water}; below that, the Atlantic
water dominates, extending down to the bottom (Fig. 110).
The hydrographic sections;
From the data under consideration, three hydrographic
sections were plotted, which show the hydrographic
situation in the Denmark Strait during the FRV "Walther
Herwig's" second section of the voyage, As can be seen
from Fig, 1d, they cross the Denmark Strait North and
South of the sill (Figs, 111, 112); the third section
shows the hydrographic situation in the northern
Irminger Sea (Fig, 113).
The temperature distribution North of the sill, gives
an impression of the layered structure of the water
column: Polar water covers Atlantic water which lies
upon the western continental slope of Iceland (Sta-
tion 633)3 a thermohaline frontal zone separates this
