2 Hydrography
2.a Permanent stations (G.A, Becker)
The two, circa 24-hour, permanent stations made
during the second cycle were intended to support
the Fisheries biological programme, A CTD probe
(Bisett-Berman) was put in operation and chemical
samples were taken from the 12 water samplers
(see page 15), The profiler (measurement equipment
for recording vertical current profiles, Type:
Aanderaa) was also put in operation, The hydrographi-
cal measurements could only be carried out with four-
hourly intervals betweenz3 so that the temporal reso-
lution is insufficient for physical investigations,
Temperature (T), salinity (S), density (64) , silicate
(Si), and phosphate (P) for the permanent stations
119 and 132 are shown in Figs, 8a to 8e, and 9a to 9e.
Further permanent station measurements (Station 300)
were carried out at the position = 62°58,0' N,
A= 9°27' W during the period from 19.30 h GMT on
1.9.1973 to 23.15 h GMT on 2.9.1973 (Fig. 10a to 10d),
This station was previously held by RV "Meteor",
A Bissett-Berman CTD probe and a Howaldt bathysonde
were operated alternately at two-hourly interval1s.
The use of different measurement systems led to diffi-
culties in the evaluation of the salinity, This indi-
cated that the Howaldt bathysonde systematically re-
gistered salinities which were too high, whereby the
error was dependent upon the salinity itself.
Incorrect measurements obtained during this cruise
are presumably due to unsuitable electronic units
which were fitted on board when the equipment was
repaired.

material from this permanent station;z the oscillatinez
