flooded as well. During the period of intense rains in (5. - 6.07.97) the first flood wave
occurred in drainage areas of Mala Wisla, Sola, Skawa and Raba and within left side
branches of Wisla, i.e.: Nida, Kamienna. During next period (6. - 7.07.97) heavy rains
occurred in drainage area of Dunajec mainly. The most significant rains occurred in
Tatra Mountains in 8. - 9.07.97, when sum of precipitation reached absolute maximum
values. And even in some cases they exceeded those values. As can be seen the time of
persistence of the rains was important factor influencing the flood extension.

The culmination waves were observed in 8. - 9.07.97. The values were higher than
warnings levels as follows:
• Zywiec - Sola - 102 cm
• Zator - Skawa - 210 cm
• Proszowki - Raba - 213 cm
• Kowaniec - Dunajec - 150 cm
• Zabno - Dunajec - 349 cm
The flood waves on Mala Wila and Sola overlapped each other resulting in one wave
similar to that observed in 1972. The most significant feature of the wave observed
near Bielany it was very long period of its persistence even longer than in 1972. Near
Sandomierz last year flood was similar to that in 1930, near Zawichost similar to 1980
and finally near Warszawa water levels were less than in 1960.
In the lower part of Vistula within Zulawy Lowland area the maximum flow (4000
m7s) occurred on 19/20.07.97. The flood wave was equal ca. 50% of the highest water
recorded whenever in the past. The second wave occurred in 29.07 - 6.08.97 and it
wasn’t so high as the previous one.
