RELIABLE
Daily forecasts
Like weather reports, they are part of dally shipboard routine: the BSH‘s
maritime forecasts for the German North Sea and Baltic Sea.
Water level forecast updates are Issued several times a day. Besides, Infor
mation Is provided about the tides, sea state, sea surface temperatures
and, during the six-month winter season, the Ice cover. The precise water level
forecasts of the BSH are needed on a dally basis not only by container
and bulk carrier operators, but also by cruise ships like the “Queen Mary” which
are bound for tidal harbours like Hamburg. To ensure safe navigation,
optimum use of cargo capacities, and short voyages, precise Information about
the maximum allowed draught Is Indispensable.
The BSH’s forecasts are of vital Importance, especially In extreme weather
situations. Storm surge warnings are Issued In time to warn the
population and allow emergency headquarters to respond Immediately and
take appropriate measures as required.
In cases of environmental pollution, the BSH’s forecasts contribute
to adequate and timely response measures.
