North and Baltic Seas that are relevant to navigational safety. The BSH‘s survey 
area covers some 57,000 km 2 , which corresponds to one sixth of the 
German territory. As depth conditions In the fairways and the positions of under 
water obstructions are constantly changing due to currents and sediment 
transports, the BSH‘s survey schedule provides for systematic repeat surveys at 
Intervals ranging from 1 to 30 years, depending on local conditions.
