Neben den Papierseekarten produziert das BSH auch digitale Seekartendaten 
(ENCs) und regelmäßige Updates für ECDIS, das elektronische Seekarten 
informationssystem (Electronic Chart Display and Information System). 
ECDIS basiert auf amtlichen digitalen Seekartendaten (ENCs) und erfüllt somit 
den IMO-Leistungsstandard zur Ausrüstungspflicht mit amtlichen, aktuell 
gehaltenen Seekarten. 
Die vom BSH produzierten ENCs für die deutschen Seegebiete in Nord- und 
Ostsee werden über ein Internationales Datenzentrum - IC-ENC - 
in Großbritannien vertrieben, das mit Hydrographischen Diensten aus aller Welt 
kooperiert. Im Zusammenhang mit ECDIS ist das BSH In doppelter 
Funktion tätig: Es produziert die ENCs und ist als europäisches Prüflabor 
weltweit führend bei der Zulassung der für ECDIS erforderlichen Bordsysteme.
